Welcome to the Farm!

Hickory Homestead

Home of Hickory Homestead Creations

We are a small farm nestled in the mountains of Bedford County, Pa.

One of our new Columbian Wyandotte pullets added to the flock this year.

Raising our own protein has been a pivotal move during this pandemic. Knowing where our food comes from is a sense of freedom.

We have a variety of 24 laying hens and 1 Ameraucana rooster. We also raise Cornish Crosses during the summer months and turkeys are raised annually for Thanksgiving.

What We Offer

  • Before ever having a farm, we always managed a garden. My mother raised us similar to how she was raised; putting up your own food in the freezer and on the shelf. By providing for your family through the winter months with canned goods, you cut down on your food bill and gives you the security of knowing where it comes from.

Since moving to the farm, we have expanded our gardening to so much more! The farm came with a vineyard and orchard already established that just needed wrangled in. We make apple sauce, apple butter and grape jelly. Our apples might not look pretty because we do not spray, but they taste absolutely delicious.

Rows of vegetables can be seen first as you come up the lane. Just to name a few; tomatoes, peppers of all kinds, rhubarb and so much more! We eat a lot of fresh produce during that time and preserve our excess by canning in a hot water or pressure canner. Some things like pumpkin puree and corn, we freeze in either freezer bags or FoodSaver bags.

  • Our shop is mainly set up for woodworking and stained glass. Adrienne builds custom furniture and signs. She has made a variety of signs from a lighted marquee sign to a simpler scroll saw sign. If you are interested in a custom ordered sign, please feel free to reach out to us through our Sign Shop section. She also likes to make unique cutting boards and charcuterie boards. Lately, she has started to dabble in adding waves to her serving trays.

Connie has a stained glass studio where she likes to tinker with new patterns. Dennis built her a wonderful glass rack that spans a section of wall in the shop and she has every color she could imagine. What she really likes to create is custom pieces for her children and grand-children.

Dennis uses the tools from the shop to work on the bigger projects around the farm. He built the original chicken run and then added on an addition to it. He also replaced the grape arbor without ever moving the vines. His hard work is much needed to help this farm run efficiently.

  • From the house, we create all sorts of things throughout the entire year. Twice a year, Connie works in the basement making batches of soap. She started making soap about 6 years ago as a hobby and has now expanded it to a small business that her daughter runs. Together they make, package, and brand their soap from scratch and are always adding new scents every round. Adrienne designs all the boxes from scratch and cuts them out on her Cricut. Papercrafts is how Hickory Homestead Creations got started and now she has taken that to custom tumblers, scroll art, and so much more!

  • 2021 was the first year of us getting into raising our own meat. We try to always order our meat from local farmers, but we wanted to start taking that task on ourselves. We started off with Cornish Crosses that we picked up from Myer's Poultry. We were able to sell most of them and keep some for ourselves. Turkeys were also a new adventure that is still in progress. Of course our 24 hens provide us with delicious eggs and we are also able to sell the extra.

In 2022 we moved four of our seven alpacas to the farm. Elvin, Luther, Cupid, and Donner are our boys that were able to be moved to the farm first. Right after shearing, we moved them by trailer about 20 miles from their original farm. We are waiting on our new alpaca shed to be built before we bring our girls over. The alpacas provide us fiber that we send to be processed and then we sell in our store as yarn or finished products.

Meet the Team

  • Adrienne Vita

    FOUNDER

I am a USN veteran with a heart of gold and hands of grit. The passion I have for building with my hands goes beyond what I could have ever learned in a classroom. I have learned most of my skills through the help of friends and asking questions!

Hickory Homestead was where I started and Hickory Homestead Creations is where I took it. I have a dream that I absolutely believe that I can achieve! With the help from my awesome family and all of you, I’m making these dreams come true. Thank you!

  • Connie

Connie is the backbone of Hickory Homestead. She takes care of the administrative work while also helping out with barn maintenance.

She taught for 20 plus years in an urban school district and finished up her time serving as the union President. Aside from making sure that everything is running smoothly on the farm, she also likes to dabble in her stained glass studio and soap. Her friend, who was the art teacher, taught her how to make traditional stained glass.

Her and her friends waste no time enjoying the retirement era, and frequently travel, bringing back with them new ideas!

  • Dennis

Dennis is a retired coal miner with a heart of gold. He has known nothing but hard work all his life, and now he helps out around the farm leisurely. He is the brain behind the tractor and will tackle any problem from that seat! He takes care of the garden by planting it and tending to it throughout the growing year.

Aside from tending to the garden, he takes care of any of our big projects around the farm. During his years off from the mine he learned how to lay brick. Fits very well with his meticulous mind!
